What to Expect When a Death Is Expected

Families in British Columbia often wonder what steps to take when a loved one’s passing is near. Whether a family member is receiving hospice care, living with a terminal illness, or simply reaching the natural end of life, understanding what to expect can help bring comfort and clarity. At Garden Hill Funeral Home, we’re here to offer guidance, reassurance, and practical support—before, during, and after a loss.

When someone we love is nearing the end of life, it’s natural to feel uncertain about what comes next. Even when a passing is expected, the days and hours leading up to it can bring many emotions—and many questions. Understanding what to expect can help ease some of that worry and allow you to focus on being present with your loved one.

1. The Medical Process
If your loved one is under hospice or palliative care, their nurse or doctor will guide you through what happens when death occurs. A medical professional will need to confirm the passing before any arrangements can move forward.

2. Contacting the Funeral Home
Once the passing has been confirmed, you can contact Garden Hill Funeral Home directly. Our staff will coordinate the transfer of your loved one into our care and gently guide you through the next steps, whether you have prearrangements in place or are just beginning the process.

3. There’s No Need to Rush
Even when a death is anticipated, emotions can still be overwhelming. Take your time to process what’s happened. We’ll move at your pace, offering support and clear information when you’re ready to make decisions about cremation, burial, or memorial services.

4. We’re Here to Help
From completing paperwork to discussing meaningful ways to honour a life, our team is here to support you every step of the way—with compassion, understanding, and professionalism.

At Garden Hill Funeral Home, we know that even an expected passing can feel unexpected in the heart. Our role is to make the practical side of things simple, while giving you space to focus on what matters most—your family, your memories, and your loved one’s legacy. Our staff take on many of the initial tasks for you when you first lose a loved one.

If you’d like to speak with someone or learn more about what to do when a death is expected, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
