Obituary of Cornelius William Fast

November 18, 1934 – June 23, 2012 Neil was born in Winnipeg, MB, the eldest son of Cornie and Mary Fast. He spent his youth on a farm in Manitou, MB. He graduated from the M.B. Collegiate in Winnipeg and then spent a year at the M.B. College. After working at Swift’s Meat Packing plant, selling magazines and taking a year of engineering at the Univ. of Manitoba, he chose a medical career. As a medical student he worked at Concordia Hospital. In 1961, he graduated with his M.D. and that same June married Betty Stoesz. He did his internship at St. Boniface Hospital and did post grad training and work at the General and Deer Lodge hospitals in Winnipeg. In 1965 Neil and Betty moved to Vancouver, B.C., where he was the Chief Resident at Shaughnessy Hospital. He took further training in respiratory diseases in San Francisco, Calif. On returning in 1969, he was in charge of the ICU at Shaughnessy and St. Vincents hospitals for many years. He finished his medical career with the Workers Compensation Board. Neil loved horses and dogs, cars and sports. He enjoyed feeding his ducks and goats on his hobby farm. The people and area of Manitou, MB always interested him. As the older brother, he cared deeply for his family and helped them whenever he could. He will be sadly missed by Betty, his wife of 51 years, his two sisters Lora (Ed) Klatt (Toronto), Louise (Irwin) Kujat (Regina), his brother Abe (Monica) Fast (Manitou), and many cousins. He was also special to numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Those wishing to, may make donations to the Diabetes Association or a charity of your choice. A Memorial Service will be held on July 14th at 2:00pm at Friends, at 2146 Main Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba.
