Brodie and Nathan,
I don’t even know if you’ll ever see this note, it’s been so llate in coming. I just learned of the loss of your mother. Your Mom and I were inseperable friends through our school years. Where one of us went so too did the other. Your Grandmother often joked that she felt lucky that she had two girls. We had such a happy time together and your Mother had quite the knack for being a ring leader! I moved away from the coast shortly after finishing university. Your mother and I grew seperate ways but, as you well know, she isn’t someone that is forgotten over time. Your Mom was a phenomenal person, so full of love and caring.
you won’t remember this but I did get to spend a day with you boys when you were much younger. You and my boys spent the better part of the afternoon froliking in the hot tub at your place. Your Mom and I chided one another for being so bad about staying in touch. I loved your Mom with all of my heart and will miss her very much. Though you lost her far too early, you were blessed at having a mother that thought the sun rose and set with you both. Nothing was more important to her than the two of you. Take care of one another. I’ll be thinking of you both.

Although I didn’t know Diane well, her sparkling personality and genuine care for kids and their families was second to none! I feel blessed to have had the short privilege of getting to know her and work with her. She stood out as a deeply caring, great sense of humour person who put children and families first. This is a great loss to everyone who had the privilege to work with her and just be around her. She touched so many people!

I am so saddened to hear of Diane’s passing. It seems unreal and my condolences go out to her Family, friends and co-workers. Diane was such an amazing woman. She taught my Son Santiago in the 3-5 room at Monkey’s (Edleun). Santiago took a liking to Diane right away. When he would come home after being at daycare all day he would often speak of “my Diane” and he has a special spot for her in his heart…I can tell. When Santiago began to have a difficult time at daycare she took extra care with him and tried to give him everything possible for comfort. Because he is not old enough to read yet, she even made him a calendar with colors on it so that he would know if it was a Mommy day or a Daddy day. She always seemed to go the extra mile. I wish I would have had the opportunity to tell her how much I appreciated what she did for Santiago. I had many conversations with her where she gave me her advice and suggestions, she told me about her Son’s and how Santiago reminded her of them. About a month ago, I brought Santiago into the daycare to say hello to her. Her smile and amazing, kind attitude will never be forgotten. We are so thankful to have met her.
Lots of Love,
Denise, Diego & Santiago.

Diane was my son’s teacher at the Edlun Daycare. She was an amazing and loving teacher. She helped my son every day with her unbelievable patience. She was more than just a teacher, she was a friend to me as well. She spoke very often of her family and how much she loved them. Our whole family is so sad to hear of her passing and we will miss her dearly. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family.

My heartfelt condolences to Brodie and Nathan. No one could have guessed that you would have your mom taken from you so soon, and most certainly not her.Your mom was a very hard worker. She dedicated her life to providing quality care to children. She LOVED being a preschool teacher at Hammond Playport. She spent 17-18 years of her life there, providing love and support to 64 kids a year. She was also always available to lend a listening ear and words of encouragement to any of the parents who needed someone to talk to. As you know, she made life long friends with many of the parents. Those ladies were like family to her. Even through hard times your mom always had a great sense of humour. She spoke often of her boys. Even to the kids at circle time using you as examples. A few things that I know she was proud of; both of you,her career as a preschool teacher, and her banana bread (and that was some gooood banana bread!) It is my personal belief that she will never be far from the two of you and will be with you as you continue your journey. You along with hundreds and hundreds of children are her living legacy.

What a shock! It has been a couple of years since I last saw Dianne. My third of four sons, Jesse attended Hammond Preschool about 13 years ago. Then Jack, my fourth son attended the same school for his 2 years of preschool. When the kids attended school with Dianne it never seemed like school was for them, I think all the parents along with Dianne enjoyed themselves and our visits more than the kids. When Hammond preschool moved into Hammond Elementary School I was so happy, I would sneak into her class and we would sit and have some amazing talks and visits. I can honestly say that seeing her, her beautiful smile and warmth always made my day. My boys loved her and always looked forward to her hugs and kindness. Dianne went above and beyond being a teacher, she was an amazing friend, tutor and counsellor. There are probably not many people in this world that have touched as many lives in such a wonderful manner as Dianne. I am deeply saddened that I will never again be able to see her warm beautiful smile or receive one of her heartfelt hugs again.
To the family, we are truly saddened by this news. Be happy in the thought that she is in another place smiling down on everyone and doing her best to make everyone’s day happy, as she did during her far too short time with us here.

I awake each morning to start a new day
But the pain of loosing you never goes away.
I go about the things I have to do
And as the hours pass I think again of you.
I want to call you and just hear your voice
Then I remember that I have no choice
For you are not there and now my heart cries
Just to see you again to tell you goodbye
The day that you left I just didn’t know
That you were going where I couldn’t go.
And now all my memories of you are so dear
But gosh, how I miss you and wish you were here.
It so hard to tell you “Diane goodbye.”
But I’ll see you again with stories to tell
Of how you were missed and how we have grown
Until then my memories of you I’ll keep near
And I’ll pass them on to those who are dear.
I miss you my friend

Remembrance is a golden chain
Death tries to break, but all in vain.
To have, to love, and then to part
Is the greatest sorrow of one’s heart.
The years may wipe out many things
But some they wipe out never.
Like memories of those happy times
When we were all together.

I met Mrs. Wilkes when I was 2. My brother was 3 and was going to Hammond Playport Preschool. I was so exited when I finally was able to be in her class for 2 years. It was amazing. I loved all the crafts we did and the cool field trips including the Stave Falls Powerhouse and the horse stables. My favourite day was when the baby kangaroo visited. My family was completely saddened to hear that she had passed away. It was two days after they had heard when we passed Hammond School. My mum said, “Now I have such a hard time looking at that school”. I said, “Why?” She said “Because I think of Mrs. Wilkes so it makes me too sad.” I said, “Why?” She said, “Because she passed away.” I was so shocked!
Mrs Wilkes, you will be missed terribly!!

I last saw Diane 2 weeks ago at a meeting, she spoke about how happy she was in her life, about her boys doing so well and making her proud and her relationship with Oerst, she shared all the fun times she had with her boys when they were younger and that she was glad she spent those times with them.
I learned so much from Diane, she was so patient, caring and loving with the children and she always wanted to know how the children were doing long after they left preschool. She had such a great sense of humor which could make the tough times so much easier.
I will miss her so much and I am priviledged that I got to know her as not only a coworker but a friend too.

Auntie Di, you will be missed by your niece, Susan and your nephew, Greg. We spent many times with you and Grandma Marg when we were young. We came out every two years to see you. I spent a week with you when you were pregnant with Brodie. I still laugh about having to help you get out of bed to go to the bathroom. Your bed was too high for your short legs. I spent two weeks with you that summer helping with Brodie. We washed a lot of clothes because poor Brodie spit up on everything. When Nathan was born, I came out with Devon and we stayed for two or three weeks. We had a great time. I remember waking up at three AM and turning off Nathan’s baby monitor so that you could sleep. Poor little Nathan was cutting teeth and I would rock him most of the night. Greg remembers coming out with mom and his friend to go to Expo 87. They had a great time. I wished we could have seen more of you in the past few years, but I have two young boys and getting out to see you seemed difficult. I regret it now. I have great memories of you smiling and laughing. You had a great laugh!! I will miss you Auntie Di. To Nathan and Brodie, I am so sorry for the loss of your mom. I know that we don’t know each other very well, but I care for you two so much. Love, Susan

You were far too young to be taken away so abruptly. Even though we drifted apart, I have so so many fond memories of great dinners, bbq’s, parties, camping trips, time spent with mutual friends and watching our kids grow up together. You were a mother to all children, dedicating your life to them and left your special mark on all of them. I wonder, is there a child in Pitt Meadows or Maple Ridge that didn’t attend your daycare or pre-school? You will be greatly missed. Rest in peace Diane Wilkes.

Diane was one of the preschool teacher’s at my son’s daycare. Diane had a special way with the children and an amazing way of comforting parents. There were many times that she reached out to me with some much needed tips and advice. I looked up to Diane and my son talked about her every day. A few months back I was going through a difficult time….I went and checked the mail and I received a beautiful picture that my son drew for me. I asked my son who mailed it and my 3 year old said, “Diane did mommy”. That was the best piece of mail that I ever received. Diane’s thoughtfulness touched my heart. What an amazing women. We are going to miss her so very much.

I’ll also remember when we all met up in Disneyland one summer evening. Good laughs, great trip.

When my family moved to this community in 1999 I was out one day at a local park with my two boys then aged 2 and new.
That day I spotted this women at the park with a class full of children. I observed and listened to the way she treated and spoke to the children and knew she had to be the one to teach my boys. The respect, genuine care and love she displayed was not something that one could ‘put on’ it was obvious she had found her calling and was perfect for the job.
Of course there was a long wait list for her classes and we had to wait over a year before my eldest could enrol, definitely worth the wait.
Over the years Diane and I became friends and I had the privilege of working with her, Shelly and Tammy as a substitute.
Her calm, understanding demeanour and her wicked sense of humour always present. There were many, many laughs.
She was such a positive role model for myself, other co workers and the practicum students and parents that came to her centre.
I, like many others, believed in her and her program so much that we volunteered on the preschool board working on her behalf realizing the gift that she was and gave to our community.
During those days together she OFTEN spoke of her boys. She was so very proud of them. And of course she spoke of Orest, and how happy he made her. I am so grateful she was able to have all of them in her life.
If and when the preschoolers were having a conflict and they needed some help with resolution Diane had a simple, classic line that I can still hear say.
She would tell them, “if you want a friend, be a friend”
Diane, you were a great friend, an amazing teacher, you will be truly missed, always loved and never forgotten.
