Boyd Campbell Affleck
On December 9, 2017, at the age of 92 and full of years, Boyd Affleck made his way home. He was
predeceased by Ruth, his wife of 60 years, their son John and granddaughters Candace and Crystal. He is
survived by the families of his eight children, including numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Boyd was born in Nelson and grew up in Beaver Falls in the Kootenay district of BC. He was sporty and
adventurous – skier, badminton champ – and once drove a motorcycle through a fiery hoop, much to his
mother’s chagrin.
As a teenager Boyd lived with his McDougall relatives in Haney. He was dared by friends to ask out the
Reverend’s oldest daughter, Ruth Haynes. He did, and they married when he returned from the Second
World War.
Boyd studied at Vancouver Bible College, then went on to Biola University to train in jungle medicine in
preparation for life on the mission field with Ruth. Their plans did not unfold as hoped and Boyd moved his
family to Winnipeg for work. Their church community was a key part of life, and Boyd served as deacon and
bible study teacher. He worked as a pharmaceutical rep, and later acquired a Radio Shack franchise, first in
Winnipeg then on the west coast, where he and Ruth relocated.
During the war Boyd was part of the liberation of The Netherlands, and he returned to the town of Harlingen
for the 50th Anniversary celebrations, followed by several more trips over the years. The Dutch people
welcomed him warmly and he became fast friends with his hosts the de Vries family.
Boyd had the great honour of visiting schools around Remembrance Day, speaking about the sacrifice of
Canadian veterans during the Second World War, adding his story to what was taught in history class. He
continued these speaking engagements as long as he was able.
Boyd was a history buff, current affairs fan, photo enthusiast and bird watcher. He loved salmon fishing,
blackberry picking and road trips. Travel of any kind, really. He and Ruth managed to see a fair bit of the
world in their years together. Day trips and longer excursions with the family held many fond memories.
Boyd’s final journey was his shortest and most important as he was gathered to his people and his Lord for a
glorious homecoming celebration.
A private family event will be held in the new year.
