Dear Grandma,
The holidays were hard without you. Part of the reason I’m always so excited to come home to BC is to be greeted by your open arms, warm heart, and beautiful smile. We knew you were with us in spirit, but it just wasn’t the same. We all took comfort knowing you were enjoying your first Christmas up in heaven.
Love Laurel

45 days has never felt so long. Haven’t been able to call you to talk about my French exams, I don’t get to ask you how your days been. I’m missing you more than words can describe and my heart hurts more than it ever has. You are so missed.

Our deepest condolences to the family of Jeanette Van De Keere. We had the pleasure of knowing and helping her as neighbours. She was an amazing and interesting gal – very independent and fun loving. She was devout in her faith (as evidence in her daily-sometimes more-walks to church) and ever so proud when speaking of her children and grandchildren. Her independence included her insistence at walking to the grocery store and would often refuse rides home even during wet weather conditions. Many times I would cart her groceries home to place on the doorstep but leave her behind to walk home because she would insist upon it! In recent months, I would occasionally pop in for a quick hello at Willow because I knew it would make her smile. She was indeed a special lady and one who will be sorely missed.

Grandma VDK, you were a woman of generosity, intelligence, faith, and grace. You were an adventurer beyond your time – the first of ten siblings to move from your small rural francophone hometown in Manitoba to Vancouver in your early 20s, where you explored, met friends, worked odd jobs, developed your sense of style, danced, dated, met Grandpa, and fell in love. You raised two beautiful children followed by four lucky grandchildren. You inspired my love of politics—you made us drop everything to watch the 6 o’clock news every night, but took the time to explain difficult concepts like love, war, refugee movements, and social change. You took me to my first concert (Rita MacNeil!), and taught me how to make a mean tortière. You were like a third parent and a best friend to me; I cherish the time we spent together for so many years.
You are so loved. And you will be so missed.
I never imagined this day would come, Grandma. I don’t feel ready to say goodbye, but I know Grandpa is waiting for you with open arms.
“When I reflect on my life blessed with good health and love of our family and friends, I would not change a thing.”
– Jeannette Marie Van De Keere (1982) in “L’Arbre de Laurent Tougas et Rosanna Choquette” (translated)
