Obituary of Alice Schafli

Alice Schafli, 93, of Maple Ridge, BC, passed away on 11 March 2020 in Maple Ridge. Funeral prayers will be at St Patrick’s Parish at 5:30pm on Wednesday 18th March 2020, followed by viewing. The funeral service – Holy Mass - will be held at St Patrick’s Parish on Thursday 19 March 2020 at 10:00am. Garden Hill Funeral Home will be handling the funeral arrangements. Alice was born in East London, South Africa, to Harry and Gertrude Sturgiss on 10 November 1926, the tenth of twelve siblings. She worked as an accounts receivables clerk for a few different companies for many years before retiring. She was also an active member of the Catholic Womens League in the parish of St Patrick’s, East London, for many years. In 2005 she began a new life in Canada with family here. She reveled in the adventure offered by her new environment, and thrived on being a member of her Catholic Parish (St Patrick’s, Maple Ridge) and it’s wonderful community, and participating in activities, especially social bingo, at the Maple Ridge Seniors Centre, and making new friends, all the while maintaining contact with her widely dispersed family. Alice is survived by her sons Patrick (Ilse), Kelvin (Kathy), grandchildren Timothy, Ruth, Rachel, Madelyn, Matthew, her youngest brother Raymond (Maretha) and many nieces and nephews, scattered across the globe! She is preceded in death by her husband Albert, her parents, Harry and Gertrude, and siblings, Mary, Ethel, Primrose, Joyce, Henry, Pearl, Jack, George, William, and Edwin. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the staff of McKenney Creek Hospice for their gentle and unfailing care and attention to Alice in her final days, to Ridge Meadows Hospital staff for their care in the preceding weeks, and to Dr Cilliers Marais for his care over many years.
