Obituary of Nancy Jean Sutherland

With deep sadness, along with great gratitude for her life, we want you to know that Nancy Sutherland died on December 30, 2016. She was pre-deceased by her beloved, Wayne Sutherland, and her parents, Jessie and Frank Grieve. She is lovingly remembered by her three sons, Geoffrey (Gloria), Patrick, and Kevin Stasko, and by her sisters, Maryellen Grieve and Rosanne Sutton (Bob Collings). Nancy will be fondly thought of by her only grandson, Dylan, and by Wayne’s children, Chris (Hermann), Wayne Jr, and Lynne. Her family is grateful for Nancy’s wide circle of friends and want to acknowledge her close relationship with Gillian Green, Linda Mann, and Helen Lindsay. Nancy was born in Winnipeg and lived her adult life in British Columbia, in the communities of Mission and Maple Ridge. She worked for over 30 years at Riverview Hospital in Coquitlam with co-workers whom she admired and with patients whom she regarded with empathy and compassion. She was adventuresome and generous with us all. She was not afraid to criticize what was unfair or unkind, but, in the final analysis, saw the humour in life. No matter what, she loved us all with a fierce and loyal love. When Nancy was interested in something, it quickly became her passion. For many years, she created beautiful Christmas crafts. More recently she was bitten by the travel bug and enjoyed several cruises and road trips with her friends. The purchase of her iPad opened new doors for Nan, and no one loved on-line Scrabble more than she. Over the past year, Nancy became involved with The Cottage, a volunteer organization that raised money for the Maple Ridge Hospital. She was its treasurer and most recently had become manager. She took pleasure in life in large and small ways. To say that we will miss her is an understatement. There will be a private gathering of friends and family to honour Nancy’s life.
