Deepest of sorrows to Shelley , Grant , "Auntie" Pat , Andrew , and the Muir family . Words have never been created to describe the loss of a beloved daughter , sister , or life companion ...... We can only imagine your grief ....... Few of us fire fighter brethren personally knew Carling , but were aware of her basketball accomplishments , her leadership , how her very presence on the court inspired team mates ,,,,, and most of all her warrior determination , which she carried with her to fight her life's most daunting challenge . From afar we knew of her bravery in this battle ,,,, and it again has inspired us . Carling has not left us in spirit ,,,, remember her , speak of her , she is still and will always be with us .

My sincerest and deepest condolences to Carling’s family and Andrew... It is devastating to hear of her passing after more than a decade of battling brain cancer... I am thankful that she passed peacefully and may now rest after fighting for so long. Aunty Pat, thank you for keeping “Carling’s Crew” informed, my thoughts are with you as well during these difficult times.
I’m forever grateful to have been a teammate and a friend of hers at Langara...She was one of the funniest people I knew and lived her life without a single regret. I remember how normal she lived her life as an All-Canadian elite level collegiate basketball player while quietly going through intensive rounds of chemotherapy and radiation. She was such a strong and unstoppable player on the court that it was easy to forget her endless cancer treatments, sometimes hours before a practice or a game. During away games when we would go out to eat, it was normal to see her with endless pill bottles on the dining table. Yet, she never complained, and we took after her leadership.
In my first year, as a young medical redshirt rookie, I was in awe of her strength, resilience, and perseverance as a top student athlete. I was going through rehabilitating a knee surgery at the time and would look to her as a role model who never complained about how tough her life was. It made me a mentally stronger person and player and I will forever be grateful to her for that.
One of my favourite memories of her was at the end of my first year. I was nervous that I wouldn’t get much playing time in the following season, let alone become a starter after my red shirt season. I remember confiding in her regarding this fear, and she said “You’ve worked so hard every single day. Even when you are not practicing on the court with us, I see you working on the sidelines each practice getting stronger and better each day. That will count for something. Keep your head down and focus. Once it’s your turn, you’ll will be ready.”
Thank you Carling for seeing me and for your words of kindness when I was unsure of myself. Thank you for the years of laughter, many times with tears rolling down my face. And thank you for the bear hugs whenever we would reconnect, especially at Langara Alumni games. I miss you dearly.
May you Rest In Peace and Paradise.
Jules

Grant and Family... I am saddened to hear of Carling's passing. As a parent coming to terms with the loss of a child I truly feel the heart ache. I have no words of 'wisdom' or insight as to how to get through the pain and sense of loss.
Just know that others are thinking of you all...stay strong.

Reflecting back on Carling…having spent most of my college days with her, both on and off the basketball court, I remember that it didn't take me long to recognize what a strong, determined, hard-working and enthusiastic person she was. I remember the night I met her, New Years Eve 2007/08, just before I began my first year at Langara...she welcomed me the team immediately and we became good friends. I know that whenever I look back on my years at Langara, Carling will be the first memory that comes to mind. She taught me how important it is to live everyday to its fullest, that with positivity, bravery and conviction, you are stronger than you think, and to enjoy life regardless of what is thrown at you. She will be greatly missed and my heart goes out to her family, especially her parents, brother and Andrew.
