I am so sorry to hear of Steve’s passing and I send my heartfelt condolences to his wife and children. I knew Steve in an early time of his life while I lived in Maple Ridge and was lucky that he befriended me. I was awestruck by his skills as a craftsman and his outgoing, helpful personality. There were many Fridays that I would put a six pack of Coors light on the end of my driveway in hopes he would stop in, I called it my Steve catcher. His renditions of songs from The Sound of Music and Marty Robins El Paso echo in my mind.
He was the best person anyone could know.
Condolences

My dad was my best friend. He was so proud of me and was my number 1 supporter that motivated me in everything I did. I will never forget all of the countless times my dad and I would sit in the shop together thinking of new things to do and projects to build. I will cherish those memories forever. I was the most happy I have ever been when I was with him! When I was on the boat with my dad and he would watch me do water spots and I could tell how happy he was that I was able to do it! He loved us unconditionally and I have never had a closer connection with anyone else before. He was my favourite person and I miss him so much. I will miss him forever❤️

We miss our burley friend/ neighbour Steve strolling down our drive way beer in hand, with his beautiful Tamara and lovely girls. The family was his pride and joy.
He was always keen to participate in our home improvement projects, provide free advice and provide lively discussions.
Steve fought his cancer valiantly, with strength , hope, honesty and courage as he did his life.

I've been fortunate enough to work with both you & Tamara. I saw firsthand how much you were loved & respected at MSC. This is such a great loss for not only your loving family at home & afar, but your work family as well. Such lovely memories being shared here. You are gone much, much too soon but if there is any condolence it's that you are no longer suffering.
Sending lots of love to you Tamara & your girls. I hope you can feel the love coming your way from your friends & colleagues. xo LisaG

Sending all our love & strength to Tamara, Mya, Summer, Charlee & Stevie on the loss of their beloved husband and devoted father. Gone far too soon, Uncle Steve lives on in the hearts and memories of all those who loved him - from one side of the world to the other.
Several years ago I was fortunate enough to spend a Christmas in Canada with Steve and get to know Mum's 'way cooler' younger brother. Apart from the many stories I had heard from the family, I was very nervous to be staying with someone who was essentially a stranger. From the moment I arrived and he pulled me into a warm hug my fears subsided - he was family. I am certain he made many people feel like this and touched the hearts (& funny bone) of all he met. My Canada adventure set me up for a love a travel and Steve helped fuel my love of adventure.
Of all the achievements Steve had over the course of his life, I have no doubt he would have been most proud of the beautiful family he created with Tamara.
Gone but never forgotten, RIP Uncle Steve Xxx
Love always,
Bela, Simon & William

Steve, too many you were charming, athletic, adventurous, colourful story teller, skilful, hard working, witty, a mate, natural leader (in life and on the sports field), loveable, to me you were always my big brother! You had my back and taught me right from wrong (mostly wrong, recalling the time we fired dad's bow and arrow up in the air to see how far it would go, quickly followed by us running for our lives as it plummeted down. We heard it land and looked to find it sticking out the roof of our house. A quick patch up by Steve and mum and dad were none the wiser). This is just a snippet of the mischief we got into. We shared plenty of good times together. We take great comfort knowing how much his family in Canada loved him as much as we did. Never forgotten, RIP Steve.

Some people are born lucky. They seem to know from an early age what they want to be. By the time he could walk and hold a hammer, Steve was a builder.
When he wasn’t throwing his hammer through our cubby house window, he could be found banging nails into things. He first learnt his trade following Dad around, ‘helping’ him with DIY projects. He became an apprentice builder as soon as he was old enough and never looked back.
Family holidays usually involved a tent or caravan, fishing rods and bush adventures. Always fun, occasionally terrifying. One incident that the four of us always recall was the day we set off to explore a place we named ”bird shit Island” A sand bank some distance from the beach. We waded over, chased birds and collected feathers until we were done. When we turned to go back we took what we thought would be a short cut only to find ourselves suddenly in water over our heads. Ray was too little to swim back and I could barely manage a dog paddle. Bird feathers were abandoned and it quickly became a case of every man for himself. Steve shot to the lead with a pretty good freestyle, I struggled behind and poor Kas tried to swim holding Ray who managed to keep his head above water by holding her in a choke hold. We called out to Dad for help when we were within earshot. He looked up, offered some advice to Steve on his swimming technique and I’m sure I heard him say “look what those kids are up to now” When we made it back to the beach, chests heaving, hearts pounding we were convinced that we had managed to cheat death by the narrowest of margins.
Steve grew up outdoors - his free days were spent fishing, hunting and riding his trail bike, usually with his main partner in crime, younger brother Ray. He was very proud of the Davy Crocket hat he fashioned for himself out of animal skins – a hybrid concoction of rabbit & possum fur complete with a fox‘s tail. We weren’t sure what to make of it but he clearly thought he was the real deal in it (and I’m sure if it hadn’t gone mouldy he’d still be wearing it). Fortunately for the Canadian wildlife, Steve left his guns at home.
As a teenager he liked AC/DC played very loud in his bedroom. Like most brothers, he could be annoying. He could also be funny and was annoyingly good at sports – especially football.
Steve was born on a day of bush fire. A February ‘scorcher’. The hills surrounding Melbourne were on fire. Ash and burnt leaves rained down on metropolitan Melbourne and mum was not allowed to take her new baby home from hospital until the extreme heat of the day had passed. Perhaps, as a consequence, he was unfazed by fire.
During their BMX bike period the boys and a posse of their friends decided it would be a good idea to stand some large metal rings up in the paddock next door and leap through them on their bikes. They soon grew tired of this and thought the stunt could be improved by dousing the rings in petrol and jumping through them on fire. It was all going well until the match was struck and sparks from the flaming wheels set the paddock alight. Their friends disappeared over the fence and the boys were left trying to stamp out fires erupting around them. When they could no longer contain the blaze they were forced to call Mum for help, who in turn had to call the fire brigade.
A few years later a severe fire tore through the country town where we lived. We had to flee for our lives, driving in the night with fire raging around us. We took shelter in a college on Mt Macedon where the boys and I hid under chairs as trees exploded against the windows. Steve joked the next day that I was under the chair crying – I still deny it but it was a fire storm, we were choking on smoke and the roof was on fire!
When we returned in the morning we found our home in tact unlike many of our neighbour’s homes, but most of the backyard was gone. Sheds and animal shelters (& their occupants) were destroyed. Mum was busy trying to put out the garden. She wondered where Steve had gone until she glanced inside the kitchen window. We were left without power or water but he was sitting down to a large bowl of breakfast cereal. Steve would never let a disaster come between him and his breakfast.
He always enjoyed his food. He used to come home from school and devour bowls of breakfast cereal. His record was 14 Wheat Bix in one session.
Steve once told me that he didn’t mind the fact he didn’t have any kids as he saw enough of them at work and they were brats (apparently he didn’t appreciate being referred to as Jay Leno). Then he met Tamara, fell in love, and became Dad to Mya and Summer. He described being a Dad as “awesome” and his family was complete when Charlee and Stevie arrived. His girls were the centre of his world.
Steve followed his heart to Canada and stayed because of the people he loved. We would like to thank those people special in Steve’s life for caring for our brother. We missed him and he did get homesick but we knew he was happy. We will miss his regular updates from Canada. We are very proud of what he achieved in his life and for the courage he showed at the end of it.
Rest in Peace brother. We love you.
“Those we love don’t go away, they stay with us every day”. Mum

Steve was a great friend and neighbour. We had so many great times together in our 20’s and 30’s. Steve helped me renovate my house and taught me so much about construction and cabinetry. We also tried our best to learn to fish for the elusive salmon together. I especially remember one time we traversed the rugged terrain of the Chehalis River Canyon trying to capture some dinner but were defeated as the salmon had no interest in our offers. We ended up hanging from the cliff’s edge and wading through neck deep waters... it was the best time even though we came back empty handed.
