The work floor at Canada Post always was a happier place when Hans would walk through. He would always say hello and chat with us while his truck was being unloaded. In the summer he would pick up ice cream for us at the Casa Gelato. He was a beloved friend and co-worker. Rest in peace, good friend.

Dear family van de Kerkhof,
I have met Hans once in my life: he and his mother visited us in Helmond in the Netherlands. Maybe there was more family from Canada but that I don’t remember. We were children and slept in the same double bed , He wanted me te tell a fairy-tale before sleeping, but I didn’t speak any word of English and he didn’t speak any word of Dutch. So I decided to tell a story in my dialect: Helmonds! And, you know …… he understood the whole fary-tale!!! He was 5 and I was 7. Very much indeed, children have there own way to cummunicate, that’s very clear.
I hope Hans had a nice life in Canada together with you.
I wish all of you much strength at the farewell of Hans.
With kind regards,
Toon van de Kerkhof.

Hans was a regular, “one of the guys” at the local coffee shop where many of us met daily sharing our stories and thoughts and ideas. Hans and I would occasionally meet for dinner in a local restaurant and it was there that I learned of his interest in science specifically in Astronomy, my own pet interest. We shared some interesting discussions. When the building he lived in was sold, and now is a condo building, he moved to West Vancouver and and only occasionally dropped by the Coffee shop. He told us he was looking for a place to live in Victoria. Now months later this news.
I have put up a notice in the Coffee shop, many people are shocked.

I’m Sorry Hans, that all those plans you were working on, for the future are left unfulfilled. It was good knowing you and sharing part of our daily lives.
I still owe you a dinner.
The coffee shop owner was in tears this morning, Jean sends you her love.
