A memory of a dear friend…
The locker room door sprung open effortlessly and in came a player with a big smile and a bag full of confidence and experience. “Hear you boys are needing some players. I’m Mick”
That’s how I met Mick and we played, laughed, swore and drank post game beers for years thereafter. An excellent defenseman, Mick blessed us with his skill, his encouragement and his strong desire to win. He was a fierce competitor- a guy that could be depended on, and a guy who had his teammates’ back. His unique yellow helmet made him stand out, perhaps a bit too much in the eyes of the referees. However, he always had fun and he, Al Kowalko and I quickly became fast friends. The “three amigos” of our Nanaimo men’s hockey team, we were always the last ones out of the locker room. Great fun, win or lose.
When Mick’s supervisory career at Kelly Douglas ended when the company folded, Costco was wise enough to see the potential in the young man. In his new managerial career, Mick was assigned hither and yon, yet we always kept in touch.
Brenda and I are going to miss Micker, but we have so many good memories that we can draw upon. We are missing you, brother.
