Obituary of Shirley Anne Florence

Please share a memory of Shirley to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Shirley Anne Florence on July 4, 2024 at Surrey Memorial Hospital after a courageous battle with pneumonia.

Shirley was born in Vancouver on June 30, 1959 to Kenneth and Phylis Florence (nee Pappenberger) and was the youngest of four children. Shirley and her family are proud members of the Katzie First Nation and she spent her entire life there. Shirley’s father was a commercial gillnet fisherman and Shirley’s pride and joy was their boat named after her called ‘Shirley Dee II’. She spent many years working alongside her father on the boat fishing salmon mainly in the Fraser River, but also Port Alberni, and Rivers Inlet. Shirley loved nothing more than spending her time on the boat fishing.

Shirley met the love of her life Denis in 1983 and they cherished the 41 years they were able to share together. Shirley and Denis were blessed with the birth of their niece Honnah Leigh Florence in 2008 and were honoured to have raised her together.

Shirley is predeceased by her parents, and her brothers Art Florence and Edgar Florence. She is survived her husband Denis, her niece Honnah, her brother Donnie Florence, her sister-in-law Barbara Florence and many other family and friends.

Prayer Service held Wednesday, July 10, 2024 at 7:00 PM and Funeral Service held Thursday, July 11, 2024 at 10:00 AM, both at Katzie Health & Community Centre in Pitt Meadows, BC.
