Deepest sympathy to all your family from my parents, Rudy and Marion Usick and our family. Your Mom and Dad were great friends of our family and had many great visits. They would always bring BC fruit to Manitoba. My Mom and Dad were friends, like a second family and they were neighbours. My parents rented their land and Olaf & Lulu’s original home quarter was recognized as a centennial farm. Lula and Olav are both very fondly remembered by our family.

So sorry for your loss. May you and your family hold on to the love she had for you and your family and the memories of the life she shared. I have many memories of visits with Lula and Olav and remember them bringing huge bags of BC apples to our family in MB, which we would eat all winter and into spring...that's a lot of apples for a family of 8 kids! But my fondest memories are when they offered to take me and my sister Louise out to BC one summer. We begged to ride in the camper shell with the dog (a German Shepard I think) and all the fresh cherries we had picked on our way to Maple Ridge. They warned us not to eat too many cherries, but we were about 12 and 13 years old and we ate and ate...and ran to the bathroom at our first stop!! They made sure we dipped our feet in the Pacific, went out to a lake nearby, learned how to stack firewood, and took in many sights like the Vancouver aquarium, Stanley Park, the Lion's Gate Bridge and I remember seeing a man getting handcuffed in an alley...that was exciting for a kid from Erickson!! They toured us all over before they loaded us and some fried chicken (from where Carol worked) and sent us to Lethbridge to visit our Aunt, Uncle and cousins, before heading back to MB. I will never forget that trip and the 2+ weeks we spent with them. I hope thinking of Lula brings a smile to your face like it does mine. She will be missed by all!! Love and condolences Maureen (Usick) Osborne and family.

Sending love and hugs to all Auntie Lula’s family! We will always remember the trips, visits, apples and coffee shared over the years! Her generosity and hospitality was so appreciated when visiting or needed. We will miss our visits when she would bring out photo albums or I-pad to bring us up to date with family accomplishments and additions. Auntie Lula taught me that you never say can’t you do! And she did! I can see the twinkle in Uncle Olav’s eyes as he greeted her! Dance on!

In passing time latterly I cam across a photo album with pictures of Lula and Family - the professional one where family members dress to impress and pose in perfection: the candid shot with every family member attired in western regalia, smiling in natural un-assumed positions! Both prints replicate the love and the warmth instilled by the parents into the children: the siblings reciprocating with those inherent characteristics.
I have heard often over the years the story of Bob (my husband - your cousin) visiting with you (the twins were still 'tuckable' under each arm) as you lopped heads off chickens in preparation for the evening meal. Your 'Might and Mien' of that moment created a lasting impression, material for endless tales pf pursuits, conquests and victories. Stories he weighed as credulous and worthy of passing on - again and again.
In deference to the aforementioned he sometimes ventured forth with the play times when you boldly sat in the horseless buggy pretending to drive while he slouched beside you playing the game all the while cuddling your doll in his scrawny little arms.
- that must have been a picture. If one could envision Ma and Pa Kettle and their movie escapades one could imagine this scene in youthful days.
Bob was not a particularly good singer nor did he remember many words to any particular song/ On your migration from Manitoba to British Columbia he rejoiced as he belted out the words: OH HAVE YOU HEARD TELL OF MY COUSIN LULA - SHE CROSSED THE WIDE PRAIRIES IN HER 'THING-A-MA-JOOLA - WITH ONE MIKLING COW AND ONE SPOTTED HOG - A TALL SHANGHAI ROOSTER AND ONE YELLA DOG!! I don't know what your 'thing-a-ma-joola' was and I don't even know if there is a spelling for that word - the good thing was this is as far as he ever got: I think this was a take-off on 'Sweet Betsy from Pike'!
I remember the trips to Manitoba where the door was always open: the coffee pot always at the ready and baked good always in the offering. It didn't matter the location nor the time of day. nor the numbers arriving, hospitality was first and foremost. WELCOME on the doormat was never more sincerely written.
I remember one trip to Manitoba to some sort of gathering at the Erickson Legion where I left to move the car and met with a lady passing by in the street. In conversation I mentioned your name and she volunteered the strength of not only your work ethic but of your ability. This was in relation to your residency at Olav's grandfather's homestead. She credited YOU with the success in moving ahead during those times. She also mentioned your firmness of mind (I think maybe the Jansson stubbornness) when you sent Olav over to the neighbour to bring back the cow you had farmed out - possibly a trade - milk for pasture - as was not uncommon amongst Prairie Folk!
I have seen your hands punch bread dough: your fingers manipulate miles and miles of yarn as you knit socks and more impressionably - blankets, always keeping in mind the needs of the younger generation not only during present day but as a cache for the future. Hands and fingers that know no idle moments.
I have seen you masterfully piece together jigsaw puzzles - monumental in dimension - boxes and boxes stored neatly waiting for the challenge but never unconquerable
I recall the tiny little dogs you carried around on your person - always fostering with love and tenderness.
I can see your determination as you pounded step by step along the roadside eagerly participating in the the rote of fast walking (jogging). Woman always in Motion.
I have heard of your countless trips to and from the homestead, planting crops, sowing garden seed, hauling back potatoes - endless trips with the 'Get-away Van. The Nordic Woman in Modern Times!
The imprint you impregnated on this earth will never be replicated! The path you chose and the mark you leave is testimony to a Remarkable Woman. Lula - I am very proud to have been a speck of dust you leave behind as you move forward into an unharnessed and restful place.
While written on Lula's 80th birthday they are words to be shared by all in Lula's memory.

On behalf of the Emerson family (Lula's sister Viola Emerson, Lula's nephew Paul, and her niece Elan), we would like to extend our condolences to the Shellborn family on the passing of Lula. Fond memories dating back to the ranch in Manitoba to Maple Ridge. Lula's place was always a hub of activity and there always a pot of coffee on the stove and food appearing out nowhere! Lula was a free spirit with strong convictions. We will remember and miss her.

Lula exuded such a warm, welcoming spirit. I can confidently say that I believe she was my Dad's favourite cousin, it was a highlight of any trip with him to Maple Ridge to stop by and visit with Olav and Lula and family! As a child I always giggled over her constant reminders to him of how she used to make him hold her dolls when they were young! As a youngster I remember the first visits and being surprised when her sweaters would start to wiggle - ta da - the head of one (or more) Chihuahuas would pop up! After the first few visits, it was something to look forward to! LOL She was the best combination of a warm heart and generous spirit, with just the right amount of sarcastic humour thrown in for sparkle! I am so thankful to have known her. She will be missed.

Sincere condolences to my cousin Lula’s family! I have precious memories of sharing, over coffee and delicious meals, the many stories passed down through our parents. We shared a pride and love for our Swedish heritage and were delighted to converse in that language. My husband Danny and I will always treasure the wonderful kitchen visits with Lula and Olav!

I remember visiting the farm in Manitoba as a child and also the coffee pot always being on and the little farm in Maple Ridge.
I am sorry we never new you liked sushi. My family does also and we should have shared Kim's Grandma Kamikawaji's sunomono recipe.
Rest in peace Auntie Lula.
