Dear Nadine and family,
Mike has fought a valiant fight and he had the best wife anyone could ever wish support him through this. Psalm 61:2 “from the end of the earth I call to you when my heart is faint. Lead me to the rock that is higher than I”. 2 Corinthians 1:3–4 “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.”

RIP, Mike. We didn’t know you well, but have known your wife, Nadine, and your daughter, Erin, through the courses at the leisure centre for many years. Our children went to school with your son, Nathan, too, at MRSS.
We are sad for your loss, Nadine, but happy Mike is free of his earthly chains. I know he will be waiting for you and the kids, maybe with another political campaign he needs your support with :-).
It’s hard not to cry; this could have happened to any of us.
I am so proud to know you and watch you all fight the good fight! See you on Friday.
with love, affection, and admiration,
Carolyn

My thoughts and tears go out to the whole family. Mick’s whole life as a husband and father, and even brief suffering at the end is a beautiful testimony to both the saved and the lost of one man’s great faith in Christ Jesus. Praise the Lord! We will see him again….soon and very soon.

We met when Madison was in kindergarten. I was so impressed by your family. You have all fought such a courageous fight and your strong faith has been such a testimony. Losing a loved one is the most painful thing we go through. Knowing Mike is free in the arms of Jesus brings much comfort. May all your special memories sustain you in the days to come. The Lord is near those whose heart is broken. Psalm 34:18. May you all feel His presence surrounding you in the coming days.

Nadine, Erin, Nathan and Madison, We’ve thought so much about Mike these past couple of years. While our years apart are many now, our appreciation for the many great moments we had, as young couples, are fond ones. Our memories of Mike are many, and filled with smiles and laughter. When Jen cut Murray’s hair, Mike had to find a bowl and a camera to hold that unfortunate moment, or when your family needed a new car and Mike heard about the ‘push, pull or drag’ sale at the local car dealer…….Mike pushed that old wreck from your driveway onto the car lot. What a great athlete he was. Mike was an incredible runner, always the first pick in floor hockey, Murray taught him squash once and soon he was beating him. We remember a guy who knew he needed a career to support his growing family and went back to school to become a nurse. Mike was an extremely intelligent person who always won every board game we every played. Our memories are full of warm friendship and laughter. Mike was about as down to earth and genuine as you get.

Good bye for now Mike. We shared many good times playing slow-pitch, floor hockey and always had fun at the racetrack. Save us a seat at the finish line, and as you often said, “put it on the nose”.
You are a true inspiration to everyone. Rest in peace. Condolences to Nadine and all of the family.

To the family of Michael Sands, my deepest sympathy for the loss of your beloved son, brother, husband, father, grandfather and friend. I was so saddened to hear of a dear colleagues passing this week, but was so inspired with the courage and faith Mike lived his life and his battle with ALS. I first met Mike when he worked at Sunrise and then at Riverview, he was always so kind and helpful and had a great sense of humor. He was always a light to others and a wonderful nurse.

My heartfelt condolences Nadine and family as you have been parted for now from someone you loved so much. Our family knows what it is to say goodbye to a husband, father and grandfather and my heart still aches with the pain of that loss even now 10 years later. I have followed your blog and found comfort and strength through the unwavering faith Mike and the family have shown over these last 4 years. You will grieve deeply over this loss but there is joy in that journey also; a joy that comes as God draws His loving and sheltering arms around us and brings comfort. Dear Nadine, and family:
My sister, Leane and I were in the same class with Mike growing up at Meadowvale PS, and then went to West Hill C.I. I believe I spoke with Mike, and/or a sibling of his at the 50th Meadowvale PS reunion.
I wasn’t aware of his battle with ALS, until recently – and then I read through the blog on line. Wow, his spirit through adversity was amazing, and your love for him was very evident through the blog posts.
I’d like to express my sincerest condolences to you and your family.

Ordinary people, making the choice to live out their lives in an extraordinary way, despite circumstances that most would take as permission to be self-centered and angry. The testimony of Mike’s life, and the faithfulness of his family, has honored God more than thousands of dollars donated to charity ever could. Heart-wrenching to have him taken from your lives so soon but his legacy to you is priceless. I pray for God’s comfort as you learn to do life without him being with you…… for now. You are all deeply loved and will be upheld in prayer as you continue your journey. Truly, all any of us could hope for, would be to stand before God and be told “Well done, good and faithful servant”, as I am convinced is what has happened with Mike!
