Dear Tanis and Nicky,
We don’t know each other, but, like your Dad, I am a child survivor of the Japanese camps on Java. I am sorry he passed away before I could make contact, and I offer my sincere condolences to you.
Getting ready for a move from Arizona to North Carolina (US), going through old newspaper articles, I came across two clippings of your Dad; one of him sitting at a table with my book in front of him, the other one a close-up of his face with a close-up of my book next to it. What a friendly face he had. What a very special man he must have been. Author of “In the Shadow of the Sun”, published in 1992 by Albert VanderHeide, I wrote two more books about the camps and camp survivors. I would have loved to include his story in my Anthology “Survivors of WWII in the Pacific”. If you have anything in writing by your Dad and you are interested, I could still publish it on my website ronnyhermandejong.com.
To have survived the horrors of the camps and later on encouraging others to talk about it was heroic. I hope Nico has lived a full and happy family life until he passed.

Remembering your Father.
Know that he had comfort with you looking out for him and peace of heart being surrounded by your love and caring ways. It has been a long journey, and you and your Dad have gone through a lot together. One of the many things he taught me was to enjoy the moments and find that inner happiness. To really take pride in whatever I was doing, and find courage to just go for it, no matter what. Time is fleeting and having walked a part of his final journey with Tanis, I know that all to well.
Still, you have so many fond memories and wonderful stories and adventures that you all shared. He indeed touched many people’s lives on many levels, as he always took interest in what everyone was up to, and always thought of touching gifts and words that would give a smile, or inspire us in our endeavors or dreams.
It would indeed give him smiles to know that we have become better people having known him. I feel I have, just knowing Tanis and her family, and appreciated that they shared in their lives with myself as well as Dale.
We will miss him deeply, and share in Tanis’ and Nicky’s loss, but know that you are not alone in this. We wish you comfort and may the memories of your Father help you find peace.
Our hearts are with you.
With much Love, Cindy and Dale

Dear Tanis and Nick jr.
We will remember “Oom Nick” as our charming, cheerful, kind and brave uncle.
Living far away in Canada and enjoying nature, great mountains and lakes, surrounded by beers in the garden and sending us pictures of all kinds of these amazing aspects of live. Although living far apart there was always a special “lijntje” and thought between us. We are so happy to have met each other in may 2013, when Uncle Nick and Tanis visited Holland. It is incredible how young he looked and never seemed to change. We will always remember his smile, jokes and optimistic energy. May our dear “Oom Nick” rest in peace.

We will miss Nico very much! I met Nico some 20+ years and although I moved to Princeton I met him regularly at the Friday lunches. I am sorry to miss the service for him. but living here and renting a place in Oroville, WA makes it very hard to make the 5 hour one way drives. It is also harder as there is a foot of snow in front of the house. I am sure Nico will understand and forgive me for the absence.
My condolences, much love and best wishes.
Tony.

May fond memories of your wonderful Dad bring you comfort during this sad time. Look back on all the good memories with your Mom and Dad while growing up. Your Dad’s great sense of humour and hearty chuckle, the happy times you and your Dad had going to the gym and later for salad at White Spot. I remember when I worked at the courier company and was able to send him a complimentary courier envelope to use, the day he retired and he said it was perfect timing, just as he was to walk out….everyone looked curiously at the courier delivery to him and wondered what it was all about…he thought that was amusing and had a good laugh about that. He was a very intelligent man and both your Dad and Mom were very proud of both you and Nicky. I also remember how kind and thoughtful your Dad was helping your Mom one day when I saw them out at the Pitt Meadows dykes for a walk. Tan, if I can help you in any way, just remember a kind voice from your dear friend is just a phone call away. Or I can come visit when you are ready. My thoughts and prayers are with you and Nicky during this difficult time. Love always, your best friend, Michelle. xo
