I just learned of Gaye’s passing. I feel like a mule has kicked me in the chest. I had the great fortune of acting in The Norbal’s with Gaye. It was my first time acting in a theater production. She was such a brilliant mentor to me. Her talent was gigantic as was her heart and spirit. What a huge loss for our community. May you rest in peace Gaye. I will miss you very much.

We met Gaye in 1997 when we moved next door to her. She had a beautiful little garden that she fussed and preened over. We, on the other hand, let our garden survive on neglect. She sometimes weeded our garden in self-defense! We lived side-by-side for 7 years and only discovered in year 5 that we shared a common birthday (July 13). We exchanged good wishes each year after that. We moved, but continued to keep in touch as she was simply a delight to be around. She was more youthful than her years and always seemed to be on the go. I was unable to attend her memorial due to illness, but I thought of her that day and the sea of people that likely showed up to fill the house with fun stories and colourful clothes. There are some people in this world that just make it shine and Gaye was one of them. We adored her and will miss her already.

From the first time I met her, Gaye was one of the people at work I was always happy to see. I was with the fish inspection program group that came over from Dept. of Fisheries & Oceans when the CFIA was created. She was one of the very nice reasons that I was so happy when we were all finally co-located in the same building on Still Creek Drive in Burnaby! My wife Petra also had the pleasure of meeting her at a couple of functions and a summer barbecue she hosted at her place. Our thoughts are with you on her loss.

It’s hard even to do these words to a wonderful friend. It is saying goodbye to a woman who truly inspired and encouraged and challenged me.
I meet Gaye in Winnipeg and directed and acted with her is so many wonderful amateur productions – I Remember Mama, Under Milkwood and we auditioned for the CBC doing scenes from A Lion in Winter and Othello.
She was always there pushing and dreaming and being creative. She served on the Board of Townhouse 9 Productions for several years.
And she was ALWAYS there for John and I. She was THE FIRST person to come and meet John when he moved to Winnipeg. She was always there when others challenged us about our orientation and we just HAD to have her as a witness for our vows in 1979.
It will be hard to renew them this year without her beaming and glowing smile.
Be at peace friend.
You are now the angel you always were.
Love ya and miss ya, now and always.

Gaye was a strong lead in the workplace for many young women (and men). I saw her put in long hours working on difficult issues. She always supported her staff and remained cool and confident under extreme pressure. I will always remember her flashy style and love of life which added so much to many of her colleagues’ workdays.

I had the pleasure of working with Gaye for many years, and with calling her friend. What a wonderful, caring person. She certainly made the world a better place. She is very much missed.
