So sad to hear of Dr. Terwiel’s passing. He saved my life! He took me as a patient back in 1970 or so and later accepted my husband and delivered our three children.
In 1970 my doctor had decided to say that I was epileptic (since he could think of nothing else to call it) I saw Dr. Terwiel in the emergency ward after passing out at school – he adjusted my neck and fixed my “epilepsy” instantly!!!!! He saved my life!!! I see how “epileptic” medicine destroys your organs!
He was an inspiration to us all – one day my daughter called me and said “Mom, I wanna go work way up north helping people.” (She had been reading his article in the local newspaper)
Dr. Terwiel will be greatly missed !!!

Dear Lila Jane,
Yesterday I saw the obituary for Marco in the dutch newspaper. and I want to offer you my condolences.
I heard every now and than some news about Marco and you, and very recently our son Niels visited you in Maple Ridge.
I am sorry that Marco had such a long way to go, and you too, and I hope that as much as he may have found rest, you may find it now, too, in the time to come.
It must have been a very intensive time for both of you, and perhaps very tiring, too.
Dear Jane, I have such good memories of our visit to you, a long time ago, with the whole family. I am still grateful for your great hospitality then. It is a pity we never met again ever since.
I truly wish you all the best for the coming years.
Sincere greetings,
etha

As the National Commissioner of the Brigade in Canada, Marco had the immense responsibility of maintaining the Brigade’s proud traditions and history, promoting the Brigade’s identity and ethos and being a trusted advisor to Priory Council. During his term as Chair of the British Columbia and Yukon Council, Marco provided essential leadership and direction to ensure St. John Ambulance maintains its position as the premier first aid training and community service provider. Marco has left an indelible mark on St. John Ambulance and its impacts will become his enduring legacy for many years to come.
Marco’s exceptional sense of service and dedication to Canada, the Brigade and community along with exemplary caring and compassion is an inspiration to all. I have very fond memories of our time together while I was in high school and owe him a debt of gratitude for having taught me to row – as I subsequently went on to row at UBC and today value this experience and memories greatly.

Marco, my wife ineke and I studied medicine at the “Rijks Universiteit Utrecht”. We remember Marco very well. He was very friendly. That period in Utrecht, after WWII, was a dynamic one. There was an influx of students from abroad (USA Korea Veterans, Norway etc.) and from our former Colonies (Netherlands East Indies). Some of us, like Marco, went to the USA and Canada. We are proud to read that Marco was Knighted.
Our sincere condolences to his family.

Dear Lila and family, Alison and I extend to you our deepest sympathy for your loss. At the same time, we take comfort that Marco has now found peace and rest. As a close friend and long-time medical colleague who lived too far away to see you often, I was in phone contact every 2 weeks or so for the past year so was aware of what you went through as the cancer progressed. You did an incredible job of care giving, Lila, enabling Marco to be in his own home until hours before his death. Marco was a wonderful person who contributed greatly to family medicine nationally, including our far north, and internationally. We shall treasure the memories of the many good times we shared with the two of you, most recently in Vancouver two months ago. Marco knew what was coming and was so open and sharing about how he felt that he taught all of us how to deal with the inevitable end of life experience. Truly a remarkable man, never to be forgotten.

The first time I met Marco was when my parents were visiting from the Netherlands 7 1/2 years ago. My mom had to see a doctor, which happened to be Marco. I still remember how he told my mom that she’d have to start taking care of herself, if she didn’t want to end up like an “oud besje” (a little old woman, literally an “old berry”). My dad and Marco immediately bonded over the fact that they both studied in Utrecht, my dad just a few years before Marco. My parents were both very impressed with Marco’s personality, and when I realized Marco wrote columns in The News, I’d send them the links so that they could read them. I ran into Marco several times since, but not in the last few years, and I’d been wondering why I didn’t see any more of his columns in the paper. Both my parents’ and my own sincere condolences to Marco’s family for this great loss.

Dear Lila Jane and family,
We will remember Marco for his constant caring….about you, about his patients, about his profession, about the College and about the world in general. He always presented his opinion, always respected others’ opinions, and always did so with a positive outlook and with a smile. Our overlapping times together on the College executive was a blessing for us to get to know him and you, Lila Jane, better.
He gave fully to the world and didn’t expect much in return….perhaps mutual respect and being listened to. Our thoughts are with you all as you share the things that mattered about him with each other and his friends, colleagues and patients. Love Margi and Brian

Marco and I were two passing ships in the night meeting up on occasion in Rankin Inlet where we both were doing what we dearly loved – looking after the health needs of the Inuit people and rejoicing in the amazing scenery of the true Canadian north.
Likewise, I am a Rotary and I was delighted that, after an evening of talk, Marco decided to put his name forward and be a Group Study Exchange leader. A group of young people undoubtedly were well served under his leadership.
I know that he will be missed up north. His name came up when I was speaking to a local Rankin Inlet carver during a recent visit. The elder had nothing but good things to say about him.
My condolences go to Marco’s family. I was my privilege to know him – even if for a brief moment.
