Obituary of Maud Ruth Pallone

Our beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and auntie passed away graciously at home on November 4. Predeceased by her husband Benedict in 1970, and son Ronald in 1998. She is survived by her children Thomas (Bev), Cynthia, Jonathon, Angela (Len), Pamela (Georges), Michele, Denise (David); daughter-in-law Sharon; 11 grandchildren; and 13 great grandchildren. Prayers are to be said on Wednesday, November 13 at 5:30PM at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church – 22561 121 Ave, Maple Ridge. Funeral Mass to be held on Thursday, November 14 at 11:00AM at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. Reception to follow mass at the St. Joseph Center, St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. Interment is to take place on Friday, November 15th at 11:00AM, Ocean View Burial Park – 4000 Imperial Street, Burnaby. Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba mom married Ben and moved shortly after to Vancouver. Husband Ben, was a member of IBEW local 213 and worked on out-of-town construction projects throughout British Columbia. Mother kept the family united and socially united the parents of our block on 13th Avenue with her many teas and sympathy for struggling families and the aged. As a volunteer, she taught ‘Arts & Crafts’ for the Kivan Boys’ Club and helped to organize a Parent Involvement Group for which she received a citation of appreciation. She also canvassed actively for the Red Feather Campaign and later the Community Chest. When a doctor prescribed two aspirins for an earache and bed rest for a neighbour’s screaming infant the distraught mother came to mom. Meningitis was averted through mom’s quick action. At a moment’s notice she took on teaching a Drama Course at the Grandview Community Center. Drama was no stranger to mom. As a young girl she would often accompany her mother, Emma, in a horse drawn buggy, wrapped in a buffalo robe, along the shores of Lake Winnipeg in sub-zero weather, making house calls. Emma, a midwife, was the only medical help in those far reaching communities. In mom’s teenage years she was an avid swimmer often daring others to dive off the piers at Winnipeg beach and tackle the waves. She loved to relay the story of swimming to the veteran’s hospital to get a cigarette to burn the leeches from her and her cousins. After the passing of my father mom made sure she and the daughters still at home visited England and Italy. This was just the beginning of her desire to travel. Her many trips to Florida earned her the moniker of ‘Miami Maud’. Mom also loved her cruises to Alaska and Mexico. She never stopped making friends and new acquaintances wherever she visited. Loved by so many, too many to mention, she will be sadly missed.
