I am a friend of Eileen’s from Winnipeg and although I did not know John I heard about him regularly. He was highly esteemed by Eileen not only as a brother but as a friend and significant touch stone in her life. I can only imagine what a great hole and persistance ache would be left with the loss of John from your lives. My prayers are with your family.
In Christ, Judith

It was wonderful to have shared, in a small way, part of your journey in Pakistan. We praise the Lord for John’s life, his love for God and people, and John’s consistency in living righteously. May his life and memory be an inspiration to those left behind. May the comfort of God’s Holy Spirit give you strength and joy as you face live without John, but still walking with ‘Emmanuel’ – God with us. Living in Karachi, we enjoy meeting up with Terry, Joanie and Barbara from time to time. Much love, Ian & Dorcas

Dear Marlene & family,
It was a wonderful tribute to John, which provided only a small glimpse of John’s presence and influence here on earth. Heaven’s records will tell the full story!
Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this time of sorrow and loss. We pray that you will feel the closeness of God’s love and comfort in every moment of your days as you adjust to John’s sooner-than-expected homegoing.
May you remember that this is not a “final farewell, but simply a see you later!” John is where we all want to be eventually! I can only imagine the homecoming he received from the great cloud of witnesses (Heb 12:1) All the friends and family that went on before, and Jesus Himself! What a celebration to the end of his race here on earth! What a great hope and erternity we have in Christ!
Blessings,
Darrell & Vanessa

Dear Marlene,
How I wish that I could and sit and share a cup of chai with you right now. I loved our talks in Pakistan. I remember particularly one time when you really encouraged me with a Scripture verse. Both you & John served with a quiet grace and steadiness. I admired this in both of you. I’ve thought of you so often in these recent weeks and often brought you and the family to the Lord in prayer. May you know God’s hovering presence and may you be able to remember His faithfulness in the past to assure you of His loving care in the present. God bless. Lovingly, Anne & Charles

Marlene, we continue to offer our prayerful support to you and your family. Aleta and I have so many cherished memories of John, yet we were also so amazed to learn of John’s (and your) connection to Inner Hope. Our oldest son, Brett is also ministering through the outreach of Inner Hope to 1st Nation’s youth. In this small detail, we feel so incredibly comforted. Our family and yours, despite all the years, continues to united in our mutual devotion for the Lord.
We are so sorry, but we will not be able to come to the service celebrating John’s life. Yet, we do hope in the months to come that we will be able to see you. There is so much more to say.

As missionaries from the Baptist church we enjoyed several lunches with John sharing our burden for Europe. John had a heart for the mission field and was always enthusiastic while listening to our stories of our retreat centre.
Our prayers are added to the many others who are supporting Marlene and all the family and friends who will be missing this godly man.
We will be thinking of you all on Jan. 5th as you celebrate John’s life.

I had not heard of John since Bible College days. I am grieved to hear of his passing, and thankful to hear the testimony of how God has used his life. I simply add my fellowship to the grief that is shared by earthly and spiritual family at this time.

This says it so well “John was an inconspicuous lover of God who loved and lived God everyday.” John lived with great integrity and humility – he showed he cared for people, not because that was his duty as a missionary or a friend, but because he really cared. His genuine life honoured God.
I remember in Bible school wanting to sit within earshot of John because he inevitably prompted laughter with his quick witted, but very quietly spoken, comments.
Your friendship over our years in Pakistan was one of the reasons we stayed as long as we did – whenever we visited your home we knew there would be a genuine welcome and hospitality, lots of conversation and plenty of laughter – a much needed break from the realities of serving in such a difficult place.
John had an uncanny ability to understand people and what was really going on in their minds; through experience, I came to trust his judgement completely. You guys served under the radar, but those who were privileged to work with you know how incredibly valuable your service, caring, wisdom, encouragement, example and support were. I have so many memories of John (and the rest of the family).
The world is a much richer place where John touched it and has experienced such a devastating loss because he can no longer contribute his particular wisdom, wit, kindness, faith and deep strength. There is overwhelming grief but complete confidence that this brother we admire so much is now in the presence of his Saviour.

We wish we could be there for the celebration of John’s life. Our hearts are deeply stirred by this unexpected turn of events. We mourn but not as those who have no hope. We have the confident assurance that John is rejoicing in the presence of the Almighty. However, we mourn for the loss of a fine Christian man from our midst. Our deepest sympathies are extended to John’s family in your grief and loss. May you sense the comfort of our loving heavenly Father in the days to come.

I wish to express my deepest condolences to the Affleck family and friends who loved John. I attended college with John 34 years ago and I was so touched by the obituary to read of John’s faithful trust in his God throughout his life. Though I live in Ontario, I knew of John’s work in Pakistan. May God comfort you all, as you walk the road of grief.
