It has been over 35 years since I had Mr. Williams as my Grade 8 Science teacher at Skeena Secondary and only by chance that I saw his obituary. I have never forgotten his kindness and generosity over all of these years and am deeply saddened to now know that he is no longer here. Miss Olszewski, if you are reading this, please know that I am so happy that the two of you came together. You were both wonderful role models for a teenaged girl who needed them.
Very best wishes and deepest condolences,
Jennifer Nicholson (nee Coy)

Even though it was over 10 years ago when I was taught by Mr.Williams, I'll never forget the energy he would bring into the room for every chemistry lesson! I despised the topic, yet he made it all so much more doable. He was a special and wonderful teacher and my deeppey condolences to his family. May he rest in peace.

I only had Mr. Williams for one semester in 2018. Despite knowing him for such little time, his classes, silly jokes, and amazing drawings, still remain in my memory. He inspired me to be a better mentor and educator for others. I want to celebrate the impact he made on students like myself. Rest in power, Mr. Williams <3

One of my favourite memories as a teenager was a camping trip with the Williams family in Osoyoos. We spent a hilarious week mostly rained into our tents and revelling in how much warmer the lake was than the air outside. I was so grateful to be accepted into the Williams family for a few days and experience the infectious humour that Roger brought to everyone, with all of us dutifully making the trip to the grocery store every afternoon to decide what to make for dinner. I remember admiring how much he found fun and happiness in spending time with his family outdoors. These are memories I'll have forever.
Holly, Sasha, Mrs. Williams, thank you. My heart are my thoughts are with you.

I am stunned, saddened and so sorry to hear about Roger’s passing. My deepest condolences to you and your family, Liz. I was drawn back in time to 38 years ago as I read Kathleen’s message, to the days when I started working with you, Roger, and others at Skeena in 1982. I have been flooded with memories from those days.
I remember Roger being such a passionate and dedicated teacher who was excited to engage his students in the wonders of science. There was always creative action in his classroom. Behind his teacher’s persona was so much heart and interest in the celebration of others. He truly became the legend behind the crazy stunts; those unbelievable classroom transformations that were always a treasured surprise for colleagues and fun for the students. I also remember you and Roger fell in love during those years. What a beautiful relationship you shared that continued to prosper and grow with family and friends over the years.
I still have the lovely carved dish, sitting within reach of my computer, that you both shared with me when I left Terrace. I must say it is now filled with treasures instead of the continuous candy that was suggested. I fondly remember our random encounter at Golden Ears Provincial Park followed by a visit to see you and Roger at your home in Maple Ridge. You were clearly true lovers of the outdoors with a mountain to explore in your backyard. Now you were married and glowing in the warmth of your life together. I have not been able to pinpoint the timing of this visit to BC but it has always been a wonderful memory.
Please know Liz that you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers, to share comfort and courage with, as you navigate the challenging days ahead. May you and your daughters find peace in sharing your personal memories of Roger and his love for each of you.

I still remember the funny stories he used to tell us and his awesome stick figure drawings of us when explaining physics problems. I also remember looking forward to going to school on a Saturday for his Biology provincial exam prep class. Mr. Williams was always so full of life, passion, and positive energy. He was one of few teachers I would go back to visit, and our conversations were always insightful and helpful for me. I do wish that we could had one more conversation. I do mourn his passing. To have known Roger is a gift; a gift that has given in so many ways. Roger could light up any room with his wit and humour, his guffaw, his clapping hands when something struck him funny, and the twinkle in his eyes. We will always remember him for his appreciation of people, of nature, of growing his own food, of hard work, of laughter, of deep thinking, of generosity, of kindness towards others, and of his deep sense of integrity.
His zany, and often out of control, humour touched us all. The room volume would escalate as his laughter bordered on hysteria. His voice would raise 2 octaves. Between gales of laughter Roger would interject a crazy witticism that was “distinctly Roger”. Then he would laugh even harder and louder. The laughter was infectious, bellies hurt, and eyes watered.
A classic memory is walking Agate beach on Haida Gwaii, and turning around to see Roger twirling a length of 15 foot seaweed around and around (most people would be dizzy), laughing, and sending the kids scattering. Roger was a person who could create joy out of almost any prop, and make a memorable moment.
We will miss your debating skills; your ability to poke holes in our logic and laugh when we torpedoed yours. We will miss another beer, and a new wine that you couldn’t cellar because friends were in the house. We will miss the hikes, and asking which way to go to find our way up the mountain. We’ll miss your ability to listen and care. We will miss your manly hugs and that twinkle in your eye that said mischief was around the corner.
You lived life large Roger, and you carried us with you. It is impossible for us to move on without carrying you in our heart. We will cherish all the memories of time shared with Roger, Liz, Holly and Sasha as the families grew up together. We are sure that heaven twinkles a little brighter with Roger in it, and those of us left behind can nurture our warm hearts for having had the opportunity to know him.
Love from Carolyn and Fass

Roger was a truly devoted teacher and volunteered so much of his own time to make sure each of his students are taken care of. I have such fond memories of his physics classes, no other teacher can make all the students laugh while taking exams because he incorporated so much humour into his teaching. It was effective and so enjoyable. Outside of the classroom Roger’s connection with us are so genuine, we really lost a good one, but Roger has inspired us all to be better, to not take everything so seriously, and to treat each other with kindness and respect. These amazing memories I have with Roger will live on forever, you will be missed. My last photo with Roger, thanks for making my graduation great and one last time, thank you so much for everything. Rest in Peace Roger.

I had the pleasure to start my teaching career at Skeena Junior Secondary with Roger in 1981. He was without a doubt the most supportive teacher on our staff. He organized many birthday celebrations for our various staff such as filling the room of his future wife, Liz, classroom with balloons on her birthday. He organized the gang to fill the classroom of our math teacher, Fass, with a car chassis complete with a toilet seat from the dump as the drivers seat. I still remember the look on the custodian unsure face when at least 10 of us carried that chassis into the school that evening. Fass loved it and kept the chassis in his room for weeks. There were many more birthday surprises he organized for staff members and the students enjoyed all these birthday surprises as well. Roger sponsored the most active student council possible as well as many other clubs and teams. It was not uncommon to see Roger working at the school til 10 pm on many evenings. I have never met a more dedicated teacher than Roger.
But as great a teacher as Roger was, he was an even greater man. His integrity was solid. His loyalty was unwavering. His spirit was kind and generous. Most importantly though, no man loved his wife more than Roger. No man loved his daughters more than Roger. That alone is a hallmark of a life well lived.
Liz, Sasha, Holly, Dorothy, Lorraine, Peppa, and Robert I hope the tremendous sting of your grief will ease but please take comfort in knowing that your Husband, Dad, Son and Brother was loved by us all and we grieve along with you.
Sincerely
Steve Scott
